Top 10 Tips to Keep Your Vagina Healthy by Dr. Drai

Hello, #MomentumLovers!

I'm Dr. Drai, a board-certified OB/GYN, sexual health expert, and founder of Momentum Intimacy. Through my FDA-approved condom & lubricant line called Momentum, I help people improve their intimacy and have a more satisfying sex life.

Today’s blog focus is on a healthy vagina. There’s nothing worse than not feeling “healthy” down there when the time for intimacy comes.

Here are the Top 10 Tips to Keep Your Vagina Healthy.

1. Choose your “cleaning” products carefully

The vagina is a self-cleaning organ and doesn’t need harsh chemicals, or any chemicals for that matter, to keep it clean. Avoid douching which can change the pH and cause infections as well as irritation. Additionally, avoid using scented body washes and perfumes which can also be irritating.

2. Use natural ingredients for lube

When using a lube to help keep things lubricated down there, choose a lube with the best ingredients. You want to make sure your lube contains superior quality ingredients and is paraben and preservative-free. Check out Momentum Intimacy's line of physician-created lubricants for natural options.

3. Practice safe sex

Make sure that you and your partner are tested and treated for any STDs. Also, practice safe sex by using a condom between the sheets.

4. Avoid ingrown hairs

Shaving down there is a personal decision. While the hair helps prevent bacterial infections and offers protection, some prefer to be bare down there. Be sure to use clean razors and natural shaving creams to try and prevent those pesky ingrown hairs and the bumps and irritation that come with them.

5. Get help for abnormal discharge

A thin clear discharge from the vagina is considered normal and often seen around the time of your cycle. If you notice any foul-smelling odor, thick or colored discharge, or any abnormality, you should seek immediate attention for diagnosis and treatment.

6. Take a daily probiotic

Probiotics help maintain normal gut flora and can help keep your vaginal pH in check.

7. Let it breathe

It’s important not to wear tight clothes and wear breathable cotton underwear to prevent excessive sweating and yeast infections.

8. Eat a healthy diet and exercise

Exercising and eating well not only benefits your heart but also helps keep your vagina healthy. Drinking lots of water, and eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is essential for a healthy vagina.

9. See your doctor regularly

Be sure to schedule your yearly physical exam with your OB/GYN doctor to make sure everything is healthy, address any concerns, and check your cervix and ovaries.

10. Use natural tampons
One common theme to having a healthy vagina revolves around choosing the right products down there. More commonly, natural products to help with your menstrual cycle are becoming more widely available. Consider using natural tampons and pads for your next period.
